Vehicle data sources

Pumpwise uses these to fill in your car's tank size and miles per gallon. They're starting points, so check them against your own car.

Real-world mpg

mpg.csv is derived from the European Environment Agency, "Real-world CO2 emissions from new cars and vans, reporting year 2024" (eea.europa.eu), under CC BY 4.0. We converted the figures to UK mpg and grouped them by model and engine. They come from on-board meters in EU cars registered from 2021 to 2024, not UK measurements, and the EEA doesn't endorse Pumpwise.

Tank sizes

tanks.csv is adapted from Wikipedia articles, with the article for each row in its source_url column. We pulled out the tank figures and assigned them to years and fuels. It's shared under CC BY-SA 4.0, the same licence as the articles.

Where those don't cover a car, we use tank sizes other drivers have entered, once at least three roughly agree. We keep the make, model, year and fuel with each one, never the number plate.

Everything else

Make, model, fuel and engine size for a number plate come from the DVSA MOT history service. Where we have no real-world figure for a model, mpg is our own estimate from engine size and fuel, fitted to mpg.csv.
